Davao City to build botanical garden, skatepark

Thursday, September 14, 2017

THE Davao City Government is set to build a botanical garden, mini-park, and skatepark to "add to the existing People's Park and Rizal Park," Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said in her State of the City Address last Tuesday, September 12.

"We have identified three areas of development - in Marfori area for a botanical garden, the Sta. Ana Wharf (Pier) for an open space for rest and exercise activities and underneath the Agdao flyover for a minipark and skatepark," Duterte said.

The current Davao City Engineers Office (CEO) situated at the City Hall Annex is also eyed to be moved to the current location of Museo Dabawenyo to give way to the Rizal Park extension.

"This movement will create an open space behind Rizal Park for a mini park with trees and provision for a small food hawker area," Duterte-Carpio said.

Duterte-Carpio assured that the CEO will be transferred to the current location of the Museo Dabawenyo without destroying the facade of the building which has a historical value to the city being the old court of first instance in the 1960s.

Meanwhile, Duterte-Carpio also said the city secured the support from the Office of the President in constructing the Museo Dabawenyo building that will occupy the area in the People's Park.

The Davao City Investment and Promotions Building will also be constructed near the People's Park and will vacate its office at Magsaysay Park.

"This building shall be built near the Pasalubong Center to move them out of Magsaysay Park in preparation for the rehabilitation of the park. The location downtown will make them more accessible to tourists and businessmen," Duterte-Carpio said.

Buildings for library and social services will also be constructed through different funding sources.

Duterte-Carpio added that the city received assistance Representative Mylene Garcia for the construction of the City Social Services and Development Office behind the City Hall Annex while the trust fund from the Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corporation will be used for the construction of the City Library Building along C. Bangoy Street.

The mayor said they will ensure that the new library building will make learning experience, relevant, timely, and exciting with traditional books, other reading materials and electronic data and materials for public use.
