THE Department of Health (DOH) in Davao Region has lined up month-long activities in line with the celebration of Oral Health Month this February.
February as National Health Month, which was declared under Proclamation 559 dated February 24, 2004, aims is to arouse the dental consciousness among Filipinos.
This year's theme is "Ngipin Kayamanan, Pagkasira Huwag Hayaan, Dentistang Mapagkalinga, Handa kang Gabayan".
According to Maria Teresa Requillo of DOH-Davao Region, nationwide activities include a series of oral health examination and treatment care for children age 0-14 years old in line with Garantisadong Pambata (GP) campaign.
"The education of oral hygiene starts at home at the age of 6 months where the tooth usually erupts. Clean the baby's mouth and teeth daily with a soft cloth or gauge pad," Requillo said.
The DOH in partnership with the Philippine Dental Society will also conduct a series of dental consultations as follows: February 2-4 at the City Council building; and February 11 in Paquibato District. There will also be a series of dental check-ups in different schools in Davao City. This is in partnership with Colgate Philippines.
DOH will also launch the search for the National Orally Fit Awards--a national campaign to highlight the importance of proper behavior to maintain optimum oral health.
The awards categories are: Orally fit program (Health Worker Category); Orally fit Day Care Center (School Setting Category), and Orally Fit Community.
Requillo said interested parties may visit the DOH 11 office for inquiries.
Meanwhile, Roquillo said they have yet to gather a complete data on priority areas for oral hygiene campaign adding that this year they will set a budget and seek the support of local government units (LGUs).(Jhun Gatmaitan)
