Drop in Davao Region's chikungunya cases

THE Department of Health (DOH) in Davao Region had recorded a total of 16 chikungunya cases for the first half of 2014, a decrease of 92 percent compared to the same period last year which was 216.

Chikungunya, according to DOH, is a viral illness that is transmitted by day-biting mosquitoes and has similar symptoms to dengue fever causing it to be mis-diagnosed, although patients suffering from the said illness will be experiencing joint pains and arthritis which can last for several months or even years.

Feeding program for 21 MAM kids launched

DAVAO City Health Office (CHO) Nutrition Division together with the Action Contre la Faim (ACF) International launched their third set of supplementary feeding program on Wednesday, which will benefit 21 moderately acute malnourished (MAM) kids in Barangay Matina Crossing.

The program was done in partnership with the Davao Adventist Hospital who will be the one donating the food commodities as part of their corporate social responsibility.

THE Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU)-Southern Mindanao lambasted the Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) for its alleged harassment on union leaders and members.

KMU-Southern Mindanao secretary general Romualdo Basilio, in an email to Sun.Star Davao, blasted the army's counter-insurgency program Oplan Bayanihan citing various cases where union leaders and members were allegedly abused.

DAVAO CITY Police Office (DCPO) officer-in-charge Senior Supt. Marvin P. Pepino instructed the 12 police station commanders and his other staff to strengthen disciplinary measures to ensure that policemen inclined toward crime will be weeded out.

The order came after at least 12 policemen from the La Loma Precinct of Quezon City Police District were identified as the gunmen who waylaid a vehicle in broad daylight along Edsa to “arrest” its passengers, detain them for seven hours, while taking away the P2-million they were carrying.

Councilor proposes local anti-trafficking ordinance

IN ORDER to strengthen the implementation of the Republic Act (R.A.) 9208 or the "Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003" in Davao City, Councilor Leah Librado-Yap had proposed an ordinance which will serve as the localized version of the said national law.

During the privilege hour of the special session of the City Council Wednesday, Librado-Yap said that the drafting of the ordinance is a part of the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking in Persons (Iacat) initiatives.

Tax ordinance amendment approved on 1st reading

THE Davao City Council during their Wednesday's special session approved on first reading an ordinance amending one of the provisions of the "Publication of Tax Ordinances and Revenue Measures".

Rule six of the "Publication of Tax Ordinances and Revenue Measures" also known as Resolution No. 2954, Ordinance No. 601 series of 1992 reads: "Publication of tax ordinances and revenue measures of ordinance from within ten days after their approval, certified true copies of the tax ordinances and revenue measures, shall be published in full for three consecutive days in a newspaper of local circulation".

Councilor wants chemical spill issue probed

DAVAO City Councilor Leonardo R. Avila III wants to probe further the chemical spill incident along C. Bangoy Street last September 4.

Avila, who is the chairperson of the Committee on Environment, cited the investigation result of the City Health Office (CHO) that the company responsible for the spill of the formic acid, identified as Pioneer Amaresa Inc., did not have proper documents for the transport and storage of the chemical.

Suspects in P26-M scam still elusive

THE respondents in the P26-million banking scam in 2013 who are facing syndicated estafa charges before the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 11 remain elusive as operatives of the Panabo City Police Office (PCPO) have yet to locate and arrest the suspects.

Suspected drug pusher killed

A SUSPECTED drug pusher was killed in a shootout with the police inside an internet cafe in Barangay 33-D in Davao City.

19% children in Davao Region get measles shots

1,744 students to take DOST scholarship exam

Stolen vehicle ordered retrieved from claimant

THE bank that is in a legal battle with a private individual over the ownership of a vehicle seized from the warehouse of alleged carnap syndicate leader Ryan "Baktin" Yu in 2012 has filed a manifestation before the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 10 showing that a court in Manila has ordered the individual to return the vehicle to the bank.

Gun raps suspect pleads not guilty

Councilor to MGB: No such thing as responsible mining

A CITY councilor on Monday stood pat against mining saying there is no such thing as "responsible miners."

Approval of 2015 city budget targeted December 15

41 Davao OFWs repatriated from Libya

FORTY-ONE Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) from Davao Region were repatriated from Libya, said an official from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration in Davao Region (Owwa-11).

Eduardo E. Bellido, regional director of OWWA-11, speaking during Monday's edition of the Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Annex said that based on their records, there are still more than 300 OFWs from Davao region who are still working in Libya.
