Davao City to sue airport officials

DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio is serious about filing an administrative case before the Office of the Ombudsman against the management of the Francisco Bangoy International Airport (still referred to as DIA) for the lack of emergency response to the overshooting of a Cebu Pacific airplane Sunday night.

"Wala pa nahuman ang draft kay ilang ginatarong ilang timeline kay basig mali-mali ang oras (The draft complaint is still being finalized, we're making sure the timeline is correct)," she said.

Aviation official sees 'pilot error'

A TOP aviation official said on Tuesday that pilot error probably caused the rough landing of a Cebu Pacific aircraft at the Francisco Bangoy International Airport on Sunday.

In a television interview, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (Caap) Deputy General John Andrews said they have gathered evidence that points to pilot error as possible cause of the mishap.

Ateneo de Davao cuts ties with Cebu Pacific

THE Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) is no longer getting the services of Cebu Pacific due to the airline's "insensitivity" and "ineptness" in handling the passengers following the accident involving one its planes at the Davao International Airport (DIA) Sunday.

AdDU president Fr. Joel Tabora, S.J., said that the Cebu Pacific personnel failed to give humane assistance to the passengers.

Ateneo passengers of Cebu Pacific recall terrifying experience

"I THOUGH we're going to die," said Dr. Jess Delgado, a faculty of the Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) School of Business and Governance, as he narrated their traumatic experience when the Cebu Pacific aircraft they were riding overshot the runway at the Davao International Airport (DIA) Sunday night.

Dr. Delgado was occupying seat 10E and his student, Gizelle Escobañez, was at 10F when the accident happened, leaving them and some of the passengers screaming.

Man killed in broad daylight

A 52-YEAR-OLD man was shot dead in broad daylight by unidentified armed men at Purok 3, Barangay Manambulan in Tugbok District, Davao City, around 10:30 a.m. Monday.

The victim was identified as Romeo "Boy" Obad Senente, of Purok 10 in Upper Tugbok.

P1.5M in cash, jewelry lost in house ransack

Davao loses P250M in 2 days due to runway mishap

DAVAO -- The temporary closure of the Davao International Airport (DIA) since Sunday evening has a major impact to the local economy, said Davao City Investment Promotions Center chief Jason Magnaye, estimating losses at almost P250 million.

The DIA was closed after a Cebu Pacific plane skidded off the runway amid heavy rains Sunday night. Normal operations only resumed Tuesday evening after the aircraft was removed.

Runway mishap affects 80 flights, 3,000 passengers

DAVAO CITY -- At least 80 scheduled flights to and from Davao International Airport (DIA) were cancelled, affecting more than 3,000 passengers, after the airport was ordered temporarily closed Monday following the runway mishap involving a Cebu Pacific plane on a rainy Sunday night.

DIA manager Frederick San Felix said the number is based on the estimated daily number of flights at the airport.

Airline passengers well protected under the law

AFFECTED passengers of airline companies should be entitled to reimbursement for cancelled flights as stated under the Air Passenger Bill of Rights.

Smoking ban nets 60 violators

23 classrooms in North Cotabato not fit for occupancy

KIDAPAWAN CITY -- At least 23 classrooms in three schools in Carmen, North Cotabato have been declared "not fit for occupancy" for children this school opening due to major cracks as a result of a strong quake and series of aftershocks that hit the town on June 1.

Dionisio Costes, in-charge of school buildings in North Cotabato's first district, said the worst hit was Kibudtungan National High School in Barangay Kibudtungan where its two-storey building with 11 classrooms and another eight classrooms were declared "not fit" for occupancy.

Rebel dies, 2 soldiers wounded in Comval encounter

A SUSPECTED communist rebel died, while two soldiers were wounded in an encounter in Barangay Tubo-Tubo in Monkayo, Compostela Valley, Monday morning.

Arrested robbery suspects ‘part of organized group’

DAVAO City Police Office (DCPO) Director Ronald dela Rosa believed that the three robbery suspects arrested last May 27, are part of an organized syndicate group operating in Davao City.

The suspects, who were nabbed by Toril police last May 27, were identified as Marvin Magoncia Quillo, 30, fish pond caretaker and a resident of Purok 7, Upper Bagong Bayan, Malalag, Davao del Sur; Ronnie Pacial Pama, a security guard, 33, a resident of Upper Tibalang, Marilog; and Alot Agkit Nogan, 41, farmer and a resident of Marilog Proper.

3 robbery suspects arrested

North Cotabato quake damage reaches P50M

KORONADAL CITY -- The series of earthquakes that struck North Cotabato since Saturday damaged infrastructures worth at least P50 million, with Monday’s opening of classes suspended in Carmen, the town that sits near the quakes' epicenter, Governor Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza said.

At 4:08 a.m. Monday, a 5.7 magnitude quake with the epicenter at 17 kilometers northwest of Carmen was recorded anew by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Citation tickets given to 38 smoke-ban violators

AT LEAST 38 people were given citation tickets in the first two days of the implementation of the New Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance of Davao City.

Security personnel dispatched to ensure safe school opening

PUBLIC Safety and Security Command Center (PSSCC) are deploying a thousand of its personnel for Monday’s opening of classes in elementary and secondary public schools.

Another landslide hits mining area in Pantukan

A MINOR landslide hit a small-scale mining area in Pantukan, Compostela Valley last week. No one was reported hurt as residents there took precautionary measures before the incident happened.

Army ‘reported death’ of young mother due to landmine blast

AN EMAIL sender refuted a story that was published last week in Sun.Star Davao and its sister publication Sun.Star SuperBalita about a young mother who died in the aftermath of a New People's Army (NPA) rebels attack along the Tagum City-Mawab national highway.

The individual, using the name Fernando Poor, questioned the version of the story that the mother, Ellen Sucnaan, 20, "died as a result of kidney failure complications and heart attack."

Shift to manual spraying urged

Rebel killed in clash

Sales agent robbed, killed

POLICE are yet to identify the two armed men who robbed and killed a 37-year-old driver and sales agent at sitio Cogon, Barangay Subasta, Calinan, Davao City at around 3:15 p.m. on Thursday.

The victim was identified as Jesus Dominguez Samban Jr., a driver and sales agent of Davao Brewing Inc., married and a resident of Fortune Village, Calinan.

Dispatcher shot dead

A 20-YEAR-OLD dispatcher was killed while a 31-year-old pedicab driver was injured in a shooting and hacking incidents in Davao City recently.

Strong quake jolts Cotabato

COTABATO (Updated) -- A magnitude 5.7 earthquake rocked Mindanao at 10:10 p.m. Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The Phivolcs located the epicenter of the earthquake at 12 kilometers northeast of Carmen, North Cotabato province.
