Mabel named one of RP's 10 outstanding councilor

THE Junior Chamber International (JCI) Philippines, in partnership with the Office of Senator Edgardo J. Angara and the Philippine Councilors League (PCL), declared Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta of the First Congressional District of Davao City as one of The Outstanding Councilors of the Philippines (TOCP) for 2009 during the PCL 2010 End-Term Conference held in Cebu City on March 12.
Now on its second search, TOCP aims to recognize the country's local legislators for their selfless dedication to their solemn oath and their outstanding achievements which benefited significantly their constituents, the community and the nation.

Aside from Acosta, the other nine TOCP winners are Councilors Nestor Archival Sr. of Cebu City, Edwin Piano of Olongapo City, Abigael Sable of Santiago City, Ellen Reyes of San Pablo City, Raul Rivera of Cabancalan City, Gedo Jarbin Jr. of Legazpi City, Lourdes Tabanda of Baguio City, Aurelio Paolo Bartolome of Taguig City and Roman Melliza of General Santos City.
As a three termer city councilor and chair of the Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Arts and Culture of the 15th City Council, Acosta is known for enacting a number of landmark legislations, which include the following: Ordinance prohibiting the use of hand-held cellular phones, personal digital assistant (PDA) and other similar electronic devices while driving; Ordinance establishing the Museo Dabawenyo, providing for its permanent home and for other purposes; and Ordinance establishing the Davao Sister Cities International Program.
In addition, Acosta is also the author of several proposed ordinances waiting to be approved in the 15th City Council, noteworthy among them are: Ordinance creating the Davao City Literacy Coordinating Council; Ordinance prohibiting and penalizing the act of driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of liquor and/or dangerous drugs; Ordinance segregating Halal foods from Haram (Non-Halal) foods; and the School Child Protection Ordinance of Davao City.
