Mendoza: DepEd's remaining bonus now assured

DIRECTOR'S Cut: (This portion features the thoughts of DepEd 11 Regional Director Susana Teresa B. Estigoy, Ceso IV to all stakeholders and recipients of the efforts to improve the basic education) I do not consider my job as plain work --- rather it is my LIFE. "We have to continually examine what succeeds and fails, and why. We have to uphold and live true to our battlecry and Deped Secretary Jesli Lapus' slogan of governance: "Edukasyon ang Solusyon"

All is well that ends well.

The 554,000 Deped personnel, most of them teachers have now a reason to rejoice.

No less than Deped Secretary Jesli Lapus in a press release issued Jan. 8, 2010 announced that the remaining P3,000 bonus, now officially known as the Productivity Enhancement Incentive (PEI) will now be paid. The amount will come out from the savings of the agency.

Reports from the regional offices of the Department of Education (DepEd) show that the P7,000 bonus of public school teachers had been fully paid out.

Lapus said that as agreed with the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), the additional P3,000 bonus of the teachers will be paid as soon as possible.

Of the P1.6 Billion needed, P550 million in savings have been released by regional and division offices and schools.

Regarding the P1.1 Billion balance, Lapus assured that if there is a need to sacrifice funds allocated for other programmed expenditures to give all our teachers and personnel the full benefits due them, the DepEd will do it.

It was also stated in that report, the cash bonus for teachers in Rodriguez, Rizal that was stolen late December is in the process of being replaced.

It was known that DepEd through its Region IV-A office is making appropriate arrangements to immediately replace the teachers' bonus forcibly taken by robbers even as an investigation currently being undertaken by the Rizal Police and DepEd.

The Department of Education (DepEd) Region IV-A Director Paraluman Giron assured that the regional office is doing its best to replace the amount from available funds.

Citing that the welfare and benefits of our employees take paramount priority, Lapus said he is doing his best to provide them with said benefits because they have stayed committed to the profession and to providing quality education of our children.

Late last year, Director Susana Teresa B. Estigoy of this Region ordered the Budget and Finance Team headed by Virginia N. Alconcel as the Chief and Mr. Exuperio Morta as Budget Officer to see to it that measures would be done to conform with the directive of the Deped Secretary to help the Central Office to generate the necessary savings to give the teachers said additional bonus.

It was relayed to Mrs. Alconcel that DepEd 11 was the first region to submit such report needed by the main office to expedite the giving of the bonus to the DepEd employees.

Teachers and employees of DepEd have nothing to worry now. Let us all again buckle down to work and do our share in educating our children --- the center of all our endeavors putting in mind that our DepEd officials have always in their minds, immediate actions to provide everyone all the privileges due us.

Indeed, it is a happy new year to one and all and even becomes happier because of this timely assurance.
