Emergence of renewed nation

THE 27th Edsa People Power celebration is very timely. It calls for a sincere urgent inner transformation of the people and of our nation. We have noticed all the events we are experiencing now had left much to be desired. We are perplexed and daunted. Some seem insurmountable. There are so many problems yet to be solved. Let us not look too far. Take our own city, Davao. It was once a peaceful city with practically no crimes in its midst. We walked in its streets assured of being safe. We lived in our peaceful homes safe from harm’s way. The leaders then meant business. They governed with an iron hand. No one is above the law. Commit a crime and you, no matter who you are, will be persecuted and tried for your offense. A sentence will be given by the court of justice. You are brought to jail according to the gravity of the crime committed. There was justice. Regrettably, this is not so at present. The goodwill and a common goal for all our peace loving citizens seemed to have failed to keep it this way.

Now, we observe the troubling incidents around us. Bannered in the TV news, radio news broadcast, newspaper headlines almost every day. The crimes of murder, drugs, robbery, carnapping, evil scheming men riding in tandems to commit their planned criminal acts, and rapes with the youth. They are trained as accomplices by adult hardened criminals because these underaged neophytes will not be apprehended for the crimes they commit. We are all for the repealing this law or the apprehension and persecution of parents who neglect the proper upbringing of their children. Street rallies and riots are resorted to by the citizens when they feel oppressed. Take the riot which happened recently in Davao. The typhoon victims of typhoon Pablo stormed the DSWD office in the city to ransack the relief goods due them. They accused the officials of hoarding the goods contributed by concerned citizens. This is under investigation right now. The government officials of the affected areas in Davao del Norte asserted that all victims were registered and given cards to claim the relief goods due them. They explained that the rioters were not registered victims. Those who instigated such public disturbance are being hunted.

The government officials and the police forces are hot on the trail of these criminals. Prevailing, publicly known, drug dens were raided with official warrants but the pushers, suppliers, and users had escaped from their lairs. Who warned them? It is not unusual that even their own family members, wives and children are accomplishes, too. They call these, “hawak sa patalim” situations where hungry families are forced to commit crimes due to poverty. There must be a workable solution to end this anomaly. We are also surprised that carnapping, a lucrative crime in Metro Manila is now in Davao. Several cases had been apprehended by the local police.

What is happening in our city? All these crimes happening here are man’s undoing. You, together will all renewing peace loving citizens, must unite. You reassess what went wrong. Tackle this one by one. This will not be easy. What are the root causes of these ills which we see in Davao now? The criminals might reason out that they do not know what is good or bad. They are just being practical. They’ve got to live, to survive. This is the way of life. We just follow the current, the tide. It is the way life goes on now. These are the reasons of the criminals. This is where they are wrong. Remember, a man, with his intellect and will, is the master of his situations -- their problems and their solutions. You rule them; not them ruling you. These surrounding influences include your family in the privacy of your homes, in your offices, with your co-workers and employees, in your society, and the group of peoples you deal with. These can even be your church, your city, town, or your barangay. It could be with the persons and supposed friends you hang out with. The plans for the solutions of your problems of your environment should include these. Educate them. Poverty seems to play a big role in these questionable aspects of daily life. Poverty should be eradicated. Education, livelihood means, decent homes, affordable supplies of basic needs must be made available to insure success in your goals.

These are workable solutions which you can have now. Love your neighbors. If each Filipino after this great self-cleansing process and inner transformation goes back to his/her office or place of work, be it in government or the private sector, you’ll be surprised. From the cleansed work environment all the persons you work with will experience the mutual feelings of trust, love, charity, and pleasant camaraderie. Gone will be the disturbing feelings of mistrust, animosity, suspicion, backbiting, secrecy, partnership in crime, covering for a friend’s misdeeds. The work atmosphere is so pleasant and this is some sure road towards a transformed society moving onwards to development, teamwork, progress, and success in nation building that we all dream of. The same will be experienced in the family life, private institutions, business enterprises, in the Church, neighborhood, in your associations, academe, and in civic and social institutions. Such a change of a total renewal will be felt by everyone.

Family life is the most significant factor to insure a meaningful and successful nation. It make time a long time for a generation to manifest its fruits but this is our first and most hopeful measure to heal our people. Let us focus on the ideal family of Filipinos. Ordinarily speaking this is a loving, caring pair of parents, mother and father, and their children. They live in a cozy simple home provided with ample needs, reared in an atmosphere of correct norms of conduct, honesty, simplicity, industriousness, respect for elders, cooperation and compassion. Religious duties, prayer habits, study habits are inculcated in the minds of the children early in life. Honesty, sincerity, morality are ingrained in their character.

We only need a few real good men and women as good parents today to turn the tide of our history as a people. Remember, this world will go to the dogs, and evil will progress if the few good men and women the parents now will do nothing about this present predicament. This is the surest way to achieve our goal, that good children reared by good parents now will become the ideal citizens of the future.
