Editorial: Step up security standards-A A +A

IT'S been years since bombings perturbed the people of Davao City, these lawless elements were at it again, sowing fears among the Dabawenyos that no matter how tight the security in this city is, there will remain evil-minded individuals who will make its way to roil the peace and order here.
Twin bombings struck the cinemas of two major shopping malls -- SM City Davao and Gaisano Mall of Davao -- on Monday night, the places which are among the most frequented by people, and yes, also the perfect targets for the bombers, along with other crowded places like public markets and terminals.
Authorities said it's too early to unmask the identities of the brains behind the explosions and their motives, as the investigation is still on-going. In fact, a Special Investigation Task Force Group was created on Tuesday to carry out a thorough investigation on the incidents.
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte was right in saying that the malls' managements, above anyone else, were responsible for what seemed to be a weak security practice in place not only inside those two but in most shopping malls here, including the other business establishments in town.
As per observation, the security guards don't really search the bags of the shoppers upon entering the malls. Most often, what they do is they let their inanimate sticks do the searching without them paying so close attention into what inside the bags, what's even worse, thorough frisking is not done on people in most instances. How then they would know if one of those entering the malls carries bombs and other deadly weapons?
Remember that a man with an evil mind cannot be shaken with a simple presence of security guards.
It's high time to set, or step up, the security standards in the malls to ensure the security of the people and put the risks at bay.
While we are waiting for the outcome of the investigation, maybe as people enjoying the life in the "safest place" in the country, we also do have a simple but significant role to play.
True, we have competitive and well-trained police officers, but they are just a few eyes to watch over the entire city this big. Let's be vigilant to thwart the criminals away.
