Editorial: To serve and not to be served-A A +A
Friday, October 11, 2013
THOUSANDS of aspirants all over the country, seeking for elective posts in the October 28 barangay elections, will file their certificate of candidacy (COC) beginning today, until Oct. 17, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. except on Sunday.
Qualified to file for COC is any Filipino citizen at least 18 years old on Oct. 28, who is a registered voter in the barangay where he or she intends to be elected, a resident in the barangay for at least one prior to election day and able to read and write Filipino or any other language or dialect.
Amid the ongoing brouhaha against senators and congressmen who were allegedly involved in the multi-billion peso Priority Developent Assistance Fund (PDAF) scam, there are still those well-meaning barangay politicos who wish to serve their constituents and make their lives better.
But Filipino voters, because of the PDAF scam, have become wiser now as they will look for the qualities of a good barangay leader who will think and act on their needs first before their own. A leader who will bring back the people's trust to good governance even in the barangay level. A leader who will not lord things over but instead cater to the welfare of his or her constituents. A leader who will seek to serve and not to be served.
Before filing the COC, may all village chiefs and members of the Sangguniang Barangay hopefuls think of what good they can do for the people and not what the people can do for them. May they weigh the responsibilities and challenges of the posts that they seek if they are up to the task.
May they be driven by a passion to see their barangays grow as one lively, productive and dynamic community. May they become the leaders who walk their talk and not just give empty promises during campaign rallies.
Big things are said to come from small beginnings. It's never too late to walk the "Daang Matuwid" if only we start from changing the corrupt system in the barangays.
Let us therefore elect only those who has integrity and moral ascendancy to govern us.
