WHAT is happening now is not what should be happening now.
What is happening now is the "big boys" mentality. This mentality translates into "what the big boys want, the big boys get." Maybe, some think that they can get away with anything and everything. Perhaps some think that they are above the law or beyond its reach.
What should be happening now is the "crime pays" reality. This reality translates into "you do wrong, you get punished." If and when those who wield power and control can and will continue to go scot-free despite clear and convincing evidence of their guilt by reason of their participation, cooperation or inducement, then they will continue siphoning the coffers with impunity.
What is happening now is the "appeal to pity" drama. This drama translates into "I am merely a victim of political persecution, not so much the subject of a legal prosecution". Maybe some think that they can play with the emotions of the people. Perhaps, some think that the people are blind, deaf and mute.
What should be happening now is the "follow the law" regime. This regime translates into "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth." Whether one is with the administration or with the opposition, whether one is in power or not, whether one is a “somebody” or a “nobody”, there should be no satisfactory justification for not complying with rules and regulations, and politics cannot always be blamed as the usual suspect why investigations are conducted and why cases are filed.
What is happening now is the "wag the dog" move. This move translates into a combination of "making mountains out of molehills" and "squid tactics" rolled into one. Maybe some think that they can distract, deviate or divert the attention of the people from what it really is to what they want to make it appear.
Perhaps some think that their fireworks will make people forgive and forget or when the smoke has cleared their sins would have already been forgiven or forgotten by the people.
What should be happening now is the "hit the pot" game. This game translates into "calling a spade a spade." Questions must be answered, not by questions, but with answers. All the parties involved need to meet or face the accusations and the allegations, not escape from them or direct them elsewhere.
What is happening now is the "everybody is guilty" approach. This approach translates into "we are all in the same boat, so do not let it sink". Maybe some think that people will accept that everybody is dirty anyway, or nobody is clean anyway, so we must all just live and let live, or leave each other alone. Perhaps some think that people can just close their eyes or look the other way since everybody is liable and culpable in one way or the other.
What should be happening now is the "some are innocent" idealism. This idealism translates into "for every rule, there is an exception." Since the situation is so sweeping and the scenario is so widespread, then guilty has become the new normal, or the general rule so to speak. It must be emphasized, however, that there is still a glimmer of hope that can be found in and felt from the few who remain unscathed by the epidemic.
What is happening now is the "burn the house down" tactic. This tactic translates into "I go down, you go down." Maybe some think that they can stop or stall their descent or decline by threatening to bring everybody down with them. Perhaps some think that since they will not survive, then nobody else should.
What should be happening now is the "build the house up" goal. This goal translates into "clean up but not burn down" or "repair but not destroy." At the end of the day, we only have one country. Therefore, we must not break it apart into pieces that we can never ever put together again.
What is happening now is the "nothing can be done" strategy. This strategy translates into "no matter what you do, nothing will come out of it." Maybe some think that they can turn people into one big helpless, hopeless and hapless lot. Perhaps some think that they can make people think that the campaign for change, reform, and improvement are useless, pointless and worthless.
What should be happening now is the "something can be started" objective. This objective translates into "all big things come from small beginnings." For all intents and purposes, transformation is not just a destination, but it is also a journey. It is the process by which we can make today better than yesterday and tomorrow the best it can possibly be.
But we have to start, so we can proceed to wherever it might lead us. And we cannot be still, paralyzed by our woes and fears, paralyzed by our worries and concerns, paralyzed by our apathy and laziness, paralyzed by our cynicism and indifference, and paralyzed by the very people who wanted us to be paralyzed in the very first place.
What is happening now should become what should be happening now. Hopefully, no matter how high we have been made to jump, no matter how far we have been made to leap, we shall all go back to where we should be, at most because of love of country, at least because of gravity.
