Editorial: New slate-A A +A
Friday, January 3, 2014
AS IS often said, we have a new slate to fill up with the coming of a new year.
The elder ones know for a fact that this new year will just as quickly slip by, while the younger ones will be groaning over how long summer, semestral, and Christmas vacations are in coming.
Still, we have a new slate.
Rappler.com rustled up quotes from Pope Francis and listed these as possible new year’s resolutions. These are:
1. Don't gossip.
2. Finish your meals.
3. Make time for others.
4. Choose the 'more humble' purchase.
5. Meet the poor 'in the flesh'.
6. Stop judging others.
7. Befriend those who disagree.
8. Make commitments, such as marriage.
9. Make it a habit to 'ask the Lord'.
10. Be happy.
Reading through all ten, it sounds like the Pope was talking to Filipinos. But really, the message is universal, it’s just that we are Filipinos and seeing our weaknesses in the least, tend to feel alluded to.
We can bungle it up, like many did in 2013. Or we can fill it with stories of successes. It is all up to us.
Today, we are full of resolutions to do this and that. That’s how it is.
Today, we are filling up the gyms trying to sweat off the pounds we have gained during the season.
Today, we are starting slow because there’s this program within ourselves that the new year officially starts on the first Monday after. You were not conscious of that, right? But look around you and notice the quiet streets, the less than normal number of co-workers, the slow pace of work. That is a habit we imbibed as kids when schools started on the first Monday after.
Because of this, we also tend to be slow in starting our resolutions, except for the gym visits. By the time we are revved up to do as we promised, we drop out of gym class and resume our old lumbering ways.
Do we want to fill up the new slate the way we filled it up the year before or do we really want to start anew. Again, that is all up to you.
But waiting for Monday to rev up pace is a reminder that nothing has changed and will?
