WITH Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte earning a lot of respect (and haters) and the good that he has done to Davao City bringing in curious visitors who would like to see for themselves what Davao City really has (among them just the past few days the inimitable Carlos Celdran, who is not above cutting down places and people to size), the focus is now on us, the Dabawenyos.

People are checking out our claims that our city is the best place to live in. Many are leaving impressed. That’s good.

We should, however, ensure that the cleanliness and the strictness of the laws being implemented be sustained no matter what. There is always the perception that once Mayor Duterte leaves, along with his iron hand, Davao will have the filth and the squalor of all other Philippine cities.

We know too well that the mayor is but one person and what made him effective all over our big city is because we, as a people, followed him.

As a result, we get the city we have now. But we cannot expect the mayor to live forever, nor do we expect any successor to be as good as him in terms of governance. Some may tend to just be all toughness and no heart. Others may turn out to be all air no substance. Still others may have too much heart but no will.

We know, however, that the choice of leadership is in our hands. Thus, as a people, we need to ensure that we continue to do as we are doing; obeying the laws as they should and doing our part as well as members of the community, like maybe cleaning up our own surroundings and throwing out garbage at the proper time and place. We also need to ensure that several years from now, we and our children know what a true leader is and will choose only the best.

In the meantime, let’s just do our part and prove all those who dare criticize our city wrong. After all, it’s not as if Mayor Duterte goes around sweeping up all litters. They simply are not there because people do not litter. As we would often say, Padayon! Of greater importance is that we have to make sure that the younger generations are taught the same, and thus will be doing their part as their turn to lead comes.
