THE recent mid-year convention of anesthesiologists in Davao saw the country’s doctors go gaga all over the city, they were skipping sessions and eating cheese, durian, marang, mangosteen, and tasting just whatever they can taste.

They also took the regular tours that every tourist in the city boasts of.

Residents can only grin and bear it, having been through all these over and over again for every visitor who comes over.

Indeed, Davao’s time has come, and while other tourist spots offer historical landmarks, nothing can beat the compactness of the experience offered by Davao when it comes to nature’s bounty – from food to sceneries and ecotourism adventures.

We all know, however, that there’s more if we look around the region. While indeed the city almost has it all, in small bites, the region has more.

With the influx of people interested to visit and experience what Davao has to offer, it’s time for a concerted effort to consolidate the experience. Many of us know how beautiful all other provinces in the region are, but very few will take the extra effort all by themselves. At the back of the many minds is… isn’t there anyone whom we can just tour with? There’s none, as each town and province tries to woo visitors on their own but as a whole cannot come up with a package to fit a visitor’s preference.

Tour operators may say, that’s because there’s not enough traffic to make the tours enticing. There isn’t because we are not seen as one total experience.

It’s like, if Kapalong has the caves, we all say, we also have caves. If the Island Garden City of Samal has the white sand beaches, we all say we also have our white sand beaches. Same with waterfalls and mountains treks, and ad nauseum. Competition is stiff, as we compete with each other when we shouldn’t.

Davao City will always be the gateway and the welcoming party. We cannot help it, after all, the city does have everything that can satisfy the regular tourist on a short stay. We all know we have more, and we all know we have better.
