Editorial: A new year, a new life

IT COULD very well be the new year to the Catholic world with the celebration of Christ’s resurrection yesterday. As a country with more Catholics than any other religious congregation, there is this burning hope that today indeed brings all the best among us, as we tackle our different work and responsibilities after that long weekend break.

May the Easter lessons and reflections remain with us and not just the memories of fun and games looking for Easter eggs and catching Easter bunnies. May these not be forgotten as we load up luggages and beach toys while constantly reminding the children to behave and get in the car quick.

But that’s how it is. There will always be many distractions. Sad to say, it is the penchant of Filipinos to be distracted all the time, and thus what’s not current is easily forgotten.

Like a foreboding of how distracted a people we can be, controversial Senator Juan Ponce Enrile most trusted chief of staff Gigi Reyes flew back to the Philippines while the Filipino Catholics were busy painting Easter eggs. Amid the children’s chatter, the painting of eggs, and tongue wagging brought about by Reyes’ return, throw in the beach and mountain resort escapades, memories of Easter may be but that of the mass where the Gospel of John Chapter 20 recounting how Mary Magdalene discovered Jesus Christ’s tomb as empty before the break of dawn; the same gospel we listen to every Easter Sunday mass.

Among the Gospels, however, that is read during Easter, what most strikes us and brings the deepest reflection is that of Luke 24: 5 where two blazing men outside Jesus tomb asked the women of Galilee who came to bring spices to prepare Jesus’ corpse: “Why do you seek the living one among the dead?”

Just like that we are reminded, this is not about death. This is about Resurrection, and may that Resurrection always remind us that we were all given a second lease in life, we simply have to take it and make the best out of it.
