Editorial: Start early or leave late

-A A +A

IT’S June 9 and classes open at the Ateneo de Davao University Matina campus among all other private schools. Except that Ateneo is of greater concern because it’s just a stone’s throw from the Generoso Bridges 1 and 2, where repair is ongoing. Like all first day of classes, expect a traffic jam. But unlike all first day of classes, expect a traffic jam in an already jammed situation.

It will thus be wise to start much earlier than normal for all those who need to be in school or at work by 7:30 a.m. Everyone will be trying to beat the traffic, and so everyone will expectedly be caught in the jam.

In the Ateneo website, it shows that all gates along MacArthur Highway will be closed and vehicles dropping off students coming from the south will have to turn right to Acacia Street where Gates 3, 3-A, 4, 6, and 7 are open for students to enter. Those coming from the north will have to pass by Pag-asa Street in SIR and drop their students at Gate 8. Considering the huge number of students and the huge number of vehicles, even if the MacArthur High gates will be closed, expect a pile-up when approaching Acacia Street.

Thus for those who have to pass by these areas, start out early. And for those who have no need to be passing through the area during rush hours, please, just stay away. We can’t expect the bridge to be finished soon, and so we just have to live with the inconvenience. A little sacrifice will go a long way in lessening the inconvenience all of us have to bear to have a structurally safe bridge. For the parents of Ateneo, carpooling helps, whether it be in a franchised carpool or a parent who has to bring his or her child to school as well. The more children riding one vehicle, the less vehicle needed to bring the thousands to school.
