Pagunsan wins Apo Classic

JUVIC Pagunsan topped the ICTSI-Philippine Golf Tour's Apo Classic in runaway fashion last week, leaving the field gasping for breath with a six-shot victory at the scenic Apo Golf and Country Club.

Pagunsan closed out with a one-under par 71 to outgun buddies Jerome Delariarte and Artemio Murakami in the three-day tournament.

Leaving by five shots before the final round, Pagunsan was never threatened to capture the P200,000 champion's purse.

The victory somehow boosted his confidence as Pagunsan is scheduled to play in Kuala Lumpur next week for a crack at the Malaysian tour.

Pagunsan, who opened the tournament with a 66 in the first round of the 54-hole event, will skip the ICTSI Pueblo de Oro Championship in Cagayan de Oro, the fourth leg of the 10-stage circuit sponsored by ICTSI (International Container Terminal Services Inc.).

Murakami carded a two-under par 70 in the final day to gain a share of runner-up honors with Delariarte, who failed to sustain his under-par rounds of 71-69 with a 72.

Both Murakami and Deliarte finished with 212s and received P92,500 each.

Elmer Salvador also carded an even par 72 and settled for fourth with a 214. He received P50,000.

Ramil Bisera of Davao City shot a 72 and tied Jun Bernis for sixth with 271s.

Seven players finished tied for eighth at 218, including first leg winner Danny Zarate, who struggled with a 73. Carito Villaroman, Richard Abaring and Ebarra Quiachon all had 69s, Mars Pucay rallied with a 71, and Ruben Sasutil and Elmer Saban each had 74. Each received P22,000.
