Poliquit, Ambasa top Araw run

TAGUM City's Rafael Poliquit and Davao City's Monalisa Ambasa captured the men's and women's 10K titles, respectively, in the Araw ng Dabaw Run 2010 Sunday in an out-and-back course at Victoria Plaza Mall.

Poliquit submitted a clocking of 31 minutes and 43 seconds to finish ahead of Brokenshire College's Anthony Nerza, Elmer Bartolo and Holy Cross of Davao College's Joselito Dugos, who occupied the next three spots, respectively.

Nerza checked in at 31:57, while Bartolo had a clocking of 32:19. Dugos recorded 34:22 in the annual event presented by Adidas in cooperation with Senator Pia Cayetano's Pinay in Action.

Finishing behind were Gilbert Maluyo (34:33), Arnie Macaneras (34:43), University of Mindanao's Roy Leonor (35:55), Rickson Rasay (36:15), Glenn Cambongga (37:47) and Marvin dela Cruz (37:54).

Ambasa outstedied Cynthia Jaro of BC, April Diaz of General Santos City and Criselyn Jaro of BC. Ambasa registered 42:03 over Cynthia's 42:43, Diaz's 43:44 and Criselyn's 44:33.

UM's Emily Avergonzado, Metro's Roneith Hatchard, Obrero's Liezl Fabian, Digos City's Jean Tuvillia, Davao City's Yvony Bartoline and Metro's Okja Ko wounded up in the next six spots.

The men's 5K crown went to HCDC's Brian Lupio, who broke the tape in the 15:48 mark, followed by BC bet Michael Constantino (16:00) and Dominador Gasper (16:53). Chrysel Cuming emerged champion in the women's side at the expense of Monalisa Wara and Krystina McNeil.

Cayetano, who also ran in the women's 10K, later led the awarding of cash prizes and gift certificates to the winners of the footrace backed up by Orix Metro Finance & Leasing Corp., Gaisano Mall of Davao, Milo, Bali Hai Spa, BMEG Premium, Sasaki & Sasaki Co. and Kannari Blasters.

Some 2,800 participants joined the event, surpassing last year's turnout of entries.

Cayetano sat down with Davao City sportswriters Saturday night and revealed her desire to run as part of her advocacy on women.

"I am joining the Araw ng Dabaw Run to launch the Pinay in Action here. It is my way of promoting my advocacy to empower women and promote equal opportunities for them," Cayetano said. "I reach out to them through sports like running, triathlon or biking, among other venues."

Cayetano, a former volleyball varsity player during her years at the University of the Philippines (UP), also had a stint as team captain of the national women's volleyball team. She had also ran seven full 42-kilometer marathons. (MLSA)
