Sabay captures Under-12 crown

SPED Bangkal's Leo Bhen Sabay clinched the title of the 11th Doña Pilar Under-12 Chess Tournament held at the Doña Pilar Learning Center grounds last Sunday.

Sabay earned 4.5 points in the five-round event to bring home the champion's trophy donated by Davao City councilor Samuel Bangoy.

Sabay beat his Jose Maria College (JMC) rivals Joerlz and Bhing Joel Gimony who occupied the next two spots by finishing with four and 3.5 points, respectively.

Joerlz bagged a gold medal while Bhing also received a medal along with fellow 3.5 scorer Norman James Varquez of DPLC who placed fourth and three-pointer Lloyd Matthew Resma of Precious International School of Davao (PISD), who came fifth.

DPLC's Michael John Varquez, meanwhile, was named top boy performer. Kapitan Tomas Monteverde Elementary School (KTMES) bet Giddel Mirantes took home the top girl performer award of the meet sponsored by DPLC and City Council.

Organizer Sherwin Orbeta said the 12th edition will get going on Saturday instead of its regular schedule on Sunday.

"This will allow the parents of the players to watch Manny Pacquaio's fight on Sunday," he said.

Registration fee is P25 for the Saturday chess competition. (MLSA)
