DCSCI to honor two arnisadors

PALARONG Pambansa gold medalist Bill Amper and POC-PSC Philippine National Games gold medal winner Melanie Merto will be cited as outstanding arnis athletes when the 17th So Kim Cheng Sports Awards Night unfolds on July 22 at the Pantawan Hall, Pagcor, Grand Regal Hotel.

Amper and Merto joined outstanding athletes for chess Austin Jacob Literatus and candidate woman master (CWM) Irish Yngayo, who recently competed in the 12th Asean+ Age-Group Chess Championships in Takaran, Indonesia.

Literatus, who was SKC male athlete of the year in 2009, got a team gold medal and two team bronze medals in the boys 14-under while eight-year-old Yngayo took one individual silver, three team bronze medals and two more individual bronzes in the girls eight years old and under event of the Asean event.

Other outstanding athletes to be honored are Anthony Nerza of Brokenshire College and Meezel Cabreros (athletics), Christopher Gavia and Karen Cantaluna (basketball), Diane Cortez (baseball little league), Eliaquim Balbero (bodybuilding), Romeo Manlubatan (duckpin bowling), Ray Snyder and Geromae Roldan (judo);

Jhon Albert Albarico and Carmela Marie Estarija (karatedo), Brokenshire's Mark Anthony Alcoseba and Eloisa Collo (tennis), Brian Alric Panganiban and Shenna Mai Ayuban (swimming) and Mirabel Roferos (table tennis).

Citations will also be given to Steve Grandeza, who is the current World Kickboxing welterweight division champion and University of Mindanao (UM) women's basketball coach Crisanthemum "Ining" Sarabia, who steered Region 11 to the championship in the National Prisaa Collegiate Games in Zamboanga City.

Davao Region's Palarong Pambansa girls basketball champion team, National Prisaa basketball women's team, National Prisaa sepak takraw men's team, men's and women's beach volleyball teams and women's table tennis team will also receive citations.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte will lead the cast of supporters who will receive plaques of appreciation in the annual awards set to commemorate the birthday of the late sports patron So Kim Cheng.
