7th Davao Baseball Cup kicks off today

THE University of Mindanao (UM) Matina field is all set for action as the 7th Davao Baseball Cup unfurls at 8 a.m. Friday, February 10.
A total of 18 teams are vying for honors in the prestigious two-day competition organized by the Datu uchida Development Foundation Inc. and sponsored by Tokyo Kichijoji Lions Club.

Defending champion Baguio Central Elementary School leads the cast of teams competing in the elementary division. Also entered are Armed Forces of the Philippines Learning Center (AFPLC), A. Pichon Central Elementary School, Bustamante Central Elementary School, Crossing Bayabas Central Elementary School, Mulig Central Elementary School, Baguio Central Elementary School, Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School, Magsaysay Central Elementary School, Calinan Central Elementary School and Lt. Col. Villafuerte Central Elementary School.
In the High School division, Calinan National High School tries to keep its title opposite rivals PNJK, Crossing Bayabas National High School, Holy Cross College of Calinan and Baguio National High School.
A brief opening rites will usher in the annual games. Tokyo Kichijoji Lions Club president Kimio Kawamata spearheads the opening program as he will be joined by other officers, coach Hidetoshi Suzuki and DUDF sports coordinator Yusuke Uchida.
Sports Development Division (SDD) officer-in-charge Pocholo Elegino will represent the City Mayor's Office
All teams get transportation subsidy, free lunch for two days, baseball equipment, free training from Japanese experts and other freebies from the annual tournament officiated by the Davao City Baseball Association.
Cash prizes, trophies and baseball equipment await the top three teams in every category. The champion teams will each get P8,000 while the next two placers will go home with P4,000 and P2,000.
