Dimakiling tops Kidapawan chess

DAVAO CITY'S international master (IM) Oliver Dimakiling crowned himself champion at the close of the 4th Kidapawan City Chess Championship 2012 at the Kidapawan City Convention Center over the weekend.
Dimakiling, who had a stint as coach in Singapore, received a cash prize of P15,000 for his feat while Henry Roger Lopez of Panabo City took the runner-up prize of P10,000.

Cor Jesu College of Digos coach Jimmy Dano placed third with P5,000 as national master (NM) Emmanuel Emperado got P3,000 for placing fourth.
Fifth to 10th placers were Philip Leyson, Recarte Tiauson, Denzel Amar, Nazario Ubanan, Ferdinand Leysa and Fide Master (FM) Austin Jacob Literatus, a multi-titled player from Doña Carmen Denia National High School of Davao City, took home P1,000 each.
Dimakiling earlier edged fellow six-pointer Literatus via tiebreak in the seven-round Swiss System format eliminations. The latter placed second followed by Kidapawan City-born IM Reggie Olay who earned 5.5 points.
Dimakiling, Literatus and Olay advanced to the Round of 16 knockout format stage along with five-pointers Tiauson, Ubanan, Lopez, Amar, Dano, NM Roel Filipinas, Leyson, Emperado, Neptali Batucan, Leysa, NM Roger Sarip, Michael Parreñas and Jon Lesaca.
Best junior player Batucan, best kiddie player Mohmin Morsalim and best female player Mary Israel Palero, a varsity mainstay at Holy Cross of Davao College, also received P1,000 as special awardees.
