THE Liga Dabaw, chaired by businessman-sportsman Guillermo "Willie" Torres Jr., is all set to hold two separate basketball tournaments this month and in July.
The 2nd Liga Dabaw Inter-Public High School Basketball Tournament, a pet program of Torres, will kick off on June 30 at the University of Mindanao (UM) Matina Gym.
The cagefest, sanctioned by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Mindanao Cluster B director Regino "Boy" Cua, is a joint effort of Liga Dabaw vice-chair lawyer Mans Carpio and secretary-general William "Butch" Ramirez. Some 12 teams, to be grouped in two brackets, will play the single round-robin elimination format where the top two teams in each bracket will advance to the crossover semi-finals.
Cua confirmed to donate 24 basketballs for the 2nd Inter-Public High School league where Oscar Salvador of Bernardo Carpio National High School is tournament director.
The Kadayawan Inter-Collegiate Basketball Tournament, meanwhile, will get underway on July 12. Twelve teams are expected to compete and vie for honors in the SBP-sanctioned meet lined up by the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office for the Kadayawan sa Dabaw Sports Festival.
Games in both hoops competitions will be played during weekends. (MLSA)
