IT'S the moment of truth as the Philippines' one and only boxing Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga climbs the ring at 8 p.m. Tuesday (Manila time) against taller Italian bet Manuel Cappai in 2012 London Olympics boxing competition.
Light-flyweight Barriga, a product of Barangay Una Boxing Team of former congressmen Tonyboy Floirendo, is upbeat about his first-ever Olympiad debut.
Barriga's Davao City-based girlfriend Anna Margie Sienes, who had a chance to talk with the Panabo City pug via Skype on Sunday afternoon, said: "He (Barriga) told me that he's excited about his first fight. He didn't say anything else about the fight because he doesn't want to feel the pressure."
Sienes said Barriga was in a good mood during their conversation even asking her jokingly about how his skin has become fairer during his stay in Cardiff, Wales where he trained for three weeks and in London where the world's premier sports spectacle is being held.
Barriga's bid is given a boost as his father Edgar, a machine operator at Sumifru, and Melita, a housewife, were on their way to London as of Monday to cheer for him in person.
Sienes confirmed that Barriga's parents left on Sunday with Procter & Gamble staff.
Chinese Zou Shiming is defending champion in the light flyweight class.
Shiming earlier defeated Barriga in the Round of 16 of the 2011 Aiba World Boxing Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan that served as qualifying for the London Games. Shiming's golden finish then won for Barriga a ticket to the Olympics as well.
