Fernandez governs Calinan chessfest

ERIC Fernandez tallied 5.5 points to emerge champion in the 2012 Cong. Isidro Ungab 3rd District Calinan Chess Festival held at the Calinan Chess Club Inc. over the weekend.
Top-seed Fernandez of Toril, who received P2,500 cash and a trophy for his feat, bested Toril bets Erwin Tubog Jr. and Henry Fajardo who placed second and third, respectively, in the six-round Swiss System format chessfest.
Fajardo earned five points to pocket P2,000, while Fajardo made 4.5 to go home with P1,500.
Toril's Zaldy Tabanao led four pointers Steve Jehan Salimbagat of Calinan, Neptali Batucan III of Toril and Pedro Flores of Calinan who wounded up in the next four spots. Tabanao got P1,000, while Salimbagat settled for P500.
Batucan and Flores claimed P200 each along with 3.5 scorers Richard Togonon, Mary Israel Palero and Marlon Cabatana.
A total of 24 players joined the two-day tournament sponsored by Rep. Isidro Ungab and Calinan Barangay Council under barangay captain Pedrito Angco and barangay councilor Mary Ann Sunga. (MLSA)
