Saturday, September 15, 2012
THE John Paul II College of Davao (JPIICD) and the Holy Cross College of Calinan (HCCC) posted debut wins by beating their respective rivals in the opener of the Davao Association of Colleges and Schools (Dacs) Collegiate Sportsfest 2012 at the JPIICD Basketball Court Friday.
JPIICD toyed with the hapless Assumption College of Davao (ACD), 106-52, in their Bracket B match. JPIICD's Darrel Bayla drilled in 15 points as teammates Michael Cañete wowed the home crowd with empathic break-away slams and Allan Patulot came out hot with three triples in the first period. Cañete and Patulot scored identical 13 for JPIICD.
JPIICD head coach Howard Delgado, in an interview, said: "Wala gyud mi nagkumpyansa sa among kalaban bantog natambakan namo sila. Nagfocus pud mi sa depensa namo para mas dali na lang mi makaiskor sa fast-break (We were not complacent and we focused on our defense so it was easier for us to make fast-break points)."
Delgado added they had the size advantage over ACD, thus, allowing them to score easy baskets.
He, however, said they will have to prepare more when they play against Ateneo de Davao University Blue Knights. Ateneo, according to Delgado, also has a big line-up.
HCCC, meanwhile, cruised past Philippine Women's College (PWC), 73-61, in bracket A behind Alberto Villa and Alvin John Dango who sank 20 and 12, respectively.
Ateneo also entered the bracket B winning column by hacking out a 93-53 blowout win over the San Pedro College of Davao while Holy Cross of Davao College lady Crusaders thrashed ACD, 118-10, in the women's event.
Games will resume today at the University of the Immaculate Conception Bonifacio Campus Gym.
The cagefest is sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Mindanao Region B and organized by Dacs under tournament chair Charles Suarez.
