Davao's Acedo wins Shell grand finals

FORMER Jose Maria College (JMC) standout Rowelyn Joy Acedo of the De La Salle University edged fellow seven-pointer Judith Pineda via tiebreak, 32-28, to emerge junior girls champion of the just-concluded 20th Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship at the SM Megamall Event Center in Mandaluyong City.
The fourth-seeded Acedo, who qualified through the South Luzon leg, recovered from a fifth round loss to No. 2 Crizelle Geron by sweeping her next four games in the double round-robin girls event.
North Luzon qualifier Geron earned 5.5 points to place third while National Capital Region's Roxanne Atayde placed fourth with four points. Holy Cross of Davao College's Mary Israel Palero, for her part, tallied 3.5 points in fifth place.
Mindanao leg champion Austin Jacob Literatus of Doña Carmen Denia National High School-Davao City, for his part, placed third behind fellow seven-pointers Jerad Docena and McDominique Lagula who took the first and second spots, respectively. Docena had superior tiebreak of 30.75 over Lagula's 28.75 and Literatus's 24.
Acedo pocketed a cash prize of P12,000 while Literatus received P15,000. They also got trophies.
Kyle Rhenzi Sevillano of Cebu City, who entered the finals by topping the Mindanao qualifying, garnered eight points to beat Daryl Unix Samantilla and Carlo Caranyagan who scored identical 6.5 points.
Visayas qualifier Vic Glysen Derotas (8.5 points) prevailed over Alexis osena (6.5) and Jesca Docena (6.0).
