Literatus, Yngayo top DCAA chess

FIDE Master Austin Jacob Literatus of Unit 3 and Dhona Yngayo of Unit 8 clinched the secondary gold medals of the just-concluded Davao City Athletic Association (DCAA) chess competition here.

Literatus, a Doña Carmen Denia National High School student, scored perfect six points to rule the boys division. His teammate John Ray Batucan tallied 5.5 points to grab the silver while Gino Angelo Asuncion 6 edged fellow four-pointer Daniel Rome Borinaga of Unit 6 via superior tiebreak for the bronze.

The top-seeded Literatus subdued Bhing Joel Gimony of Unit 5, Jayson Engay of Unit 2, Asuncion of Unit 6, Christian Bandoquillo of Unit 8, Borinaga of Unit 6 and Jelord Villareal of Unit 4 in the six-round Swiss System format chessfest.

Davao Central College's Yngayo, for her part, topped the girls' event by earning 5.5 points while four-pointer Holy Cross of Davao College's Ella Grace Moulic and Hannah Amoncio of Unit 4 ended up with a silver and a bronze, respectively.

Third-ranked Yngayo drew with Moulic in the third round then she went on to beat Mary Ann Aragones of Unit 4, Mary Jonah Lequin of Unit 3, Kryzafel Kyra Castro of Unit 6, Marianne Jasmine Infiesto of Unit 1 and Joerlz Gimony of Unit 5 in the other rounds.

In the elementary division, Ateneo de Davao University player John Marvin Miciano gave Unit 6 a gold in the boys' class having swept all his six games as Magallanes Elementary School's Earl Rhay Mantilla garnered five points to go home with the silver. Unit 3's Sumali Sekak III got the bronze with four points.

Miciano stamped rivals Erbel Liwanan of Unit 5, Mantilla, Allen Davin de Asis of Unit 1, Eric Yngayo, Jr. of Unit 8, Sekak and Matthew Kyle of Unit 3.

Davao Wisdom Academy's Honey Grace Buenafe of Unit 8, meanwhile, nipped teammate Irish Yngayo of DCC with better tiebreaks for the elementary girls gold. Both scored six points.

Only the champions and runners-up of each category will advance to the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet slated in February in Tagum City, Davao del Norte next year.

The city eliminations will wrap up today.
