LESS than 24 hours after completing yet another splendid performance, the Davao City National High School (DCNHS) girl spikers took the court to start a fresh campaign against the best rivals out there. No sweat.
With Glenda Gregg Agang and Eden Faith Maturan leading the attack, DNCHS posted two quick victories to open its title-retention bid on an impressive note Friday in the Mindanao leg of the 10th Shakey's Volleyball League at the University of Immaculate Conception (UIC) Bajada campus gym.
The DCNHS spikers first crushed General Santos City National High School (GSCNHS) in the first match of the day, 25-12, 25-18, then took the floor less than a hour later to repulse Cor Jesu College CJC), 25-7, 25-15, to suddenly lead Pool A with its 2-0 card.
The game against CJC was DCNHS's fifth straight in less than 24 hours after having played three previous matches in winning the gold in girls volleyball of the Davao City Athletic Association (DCAA) Meet Thursday afternoon representing Unit I.
"They don't get tired. They are used to that," DCNHS coach Soledad Torino said in the vernacular as she pointed to her players' tenacity during competitions.
The DCNHS team, in fact, had just planed in to Davao City after competing in the Milo Olympics national finals in Marikina where it took the bronze medal.
Then DCAA, and now the Shakey's Mindanao eliminations which DNCHS had ruled the past three years.
The Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU), DNCHS's arch-rival, also won its opening assignment in the Shakey's event Friday when it downed Stella Maris Academy also in straight sets, 25-13, 25-18, for its first win in Pool B.
AdDU, which took the silver in the DCAA Meet, was runner-up to DCNHS in the previous staging of the Shakey's Girls Volleyball League Mindanao leg.
The Tagum City National High School (TCNHS) and Iligan City National High School won their respective matches during the opener Thursday.
TCNHS topped Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School (PNJKIS), 25-14, 25-7, in a Pool A game.
ICNHS, meanwhile, defeated host team UIC, 25-16, 25-15, in Pool B.
The winner of the Mindanao elimination will advance to the all-expense paid trip to the Shakey's Girls Volleyball League national finals.
