AAK Davao wins 7 golds in Adidas Cup

THE Association for the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK) Davao collected a total of seven gold medals, eight silvers and eight bronzes in the 2012 Adidas International Karate Cup at the SM Mall of Asia over the weekend.

Alexa Gabrielle Barnes of Davao Christian High School led the medal haul with two golds in six to seven years old girls intermediate kata and kumite events. Davao Central High School's Rick David Aquino (6-7 boys intermediate kata), Tecarro School's Darlene Maramara (12-13 girls kumite), Davao Christian High School's Kassandra Danielle Barnes (girls cadets intermediate kata), Ateneo de Davao University's Arthur Lao III (juniors open kata) and University of the Immaculate Conception's Pavel Jervis Bacayo (juniors above 68 kgs. kumite) also chipped in one gold apiece.

Onna Ysabelle Barnes salvaged two silvers (kata, kumite) while UIC's Vivian Cortes (kata), Bacayo (kata) and Lao (kumite) also accounted for a silver each.


The bronze winners were Stella Maris Academy of Davao's Carmela Marie Estarija (kata, kumite), UIC's Danya Paquil (kata, kumite), Denzel Maramara (kumite), Angelica Noro (kata), UIC's Mary Ann Pilarte (kumite) and Kassandara Barnes (kumite).

AAK Davao chief Rommel Tan said some 400 players entries joined the tournament that was also participated in by Japan and Indonesia karatekas. The championship was graced by newly re-elected Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Peping Cojuangco, secretary-general Steve Hontiveros, AAK chair and Ice Skating Union of the Philippines president Manuel Pocholo Veguillas and Hans Sy of SM.

Tan's wards also attended the kumite seminar conducted by Sensei Shin Tsukii held on Sunday at the Jose Rizal University Gymnasium from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"We had a great time and we learned alot from the seminar given by the former RP karatedo team coach who is now based in Japan," Tan said in an e-mailed statement furnished to Sun.Star Davao late Monday evening.
AAK Davao team also paid a visit to Philippine Sports Commision (PSC) chair Guillermo T. Iroy.

TKS Petron of Engr. Mike and Esther Te, Vantage Sports Promotions of Kenneth and Honey Sai, Marcelo Ayala, Engr. Celso Manaois, Benjade Construction, Ricks Carwash, Engr. Edward Lim, Beefit Gym and AAK Davao parents supported AAK Davao's stint in the annual karatefest.
