THE Ateneo de Davao (AdDU) Blue Knights crushed Agro Sailors, 64-60, in a battle of two undefeated teams in the juniors division of the Emilio D. Escandor Memorial Cup basketball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) Gym Saturday.
Five players scored in double figures as the Blue Knights registered their second straight win to grab the top spot in Bracket B with a 2-0 card.
Sean Africa led the Ateneo attack with 16 points while Miguel Gencio and Patrick Dulau chipped in 15 and 12, respectively.
Ateneo, mentored by Miggy Solitaria, was also unforgiving in defense as the team did not allow even a single Sailor to reach double figures in scoring.
In another showdown of two unbeaten teams, Ateneo de Davao University put on a stonewall defense to whip hapless erstwhile leader Holy Child School of Davao (HCSD). 81-41.
The Matina-based dribblers, who were playing for the first time in over a month, showed no sign of rustiness as they started the game on a 15-0 run.
That blistering start proved to be the telling blows as Ateneo cruised to its second win in the tournament's mini division. HCSD fell to 2-1.
Lawrence Angeles leads the charge for Ateneo with 15 points, followed by Eric Tuadles' 13 markers. Aspen Ba¤os lead the losing team with 14 points.
In the third game featuring two passerelle squads, Ford Academy of the Arts survived Emar Learning, 61-51, to stretch its winning run to three games and tied Ateneo de Davao on top of the standings.
In the final game of the day, recently-crowned champion in the GS Cup juniors division, Assumption College of Davao (ACD) Warriors had an easy time turning back Jose Maria College, 65-47.
The Warriors played without their mainman Patrick Quidato, but played like a well-oiled machine in hacking out the victory.
Matthew Bonleon led the Warriors with 12 points while Jhayston Oquias added 10.
Quidato came into the game in street clothes due to chicken pox. (CRAM)
