BROKENSHIRE College standout Anthony Nerza vindicated himself by capturing two gold medals for Davao Region at the close of the 2013 Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) National Games athletics competition on Thursday at the Narciso Ramos Sports Complex in Lingayen, Pangasinan.
The twin feat came on the heels of his bagging a silver in men's 5,000m in Tuesday's opener.
Nerza, a 23-year-old third year PE student, only took home two silvers from the National Prisaa Games held in Cebu City last year.
"Nalipay ko kaayo kay nakadaug ko ug duha ka bulawang medalya karong tuiga. Dili parehas sa miaging tuig, mas naging focus ko sa akong training ug maayo sab akong kondisyon karon (I'm so happy to have won two golds this year. I've been more focused on my training this time and I'm in good physical condition)," Nerza said in a phone interview.
Nerza topped the men's three-kilometer (3K) steeplechase with a time of nine minutes and 50 seconds before stamping his 10K rivals in 33 minutes.
He last copped two golds (5K, 10K) in the 2011 edition of the Prisaa nationals in Zamboanga City.
Nerza said ruling the 3K steeplechase was sheer luck since he never had the chance to train for it, adding: "Wala jud ko kapraktis anang ambak-ambak sa steeplechase kay sa dagan rajud ko ensayado. Nakatuon ra ko sa pagtan-aw tan-aw sa mga gaambak kung ginaunsa nila (I haven't had the chance to train the jumping part of the steeplechase since I'm only used to plain running. I just observed others how they jump and that's how I learned)," he said.
Nerza, who is set to arrive on Saturday with his teammates, is also set to race in the men's 18K of the Philhealth-DOH Run on Sunday.
Southern Mindanao also hauled the women's 4X100m bronze courtesy of University of Mindanao (UM) Davao's Langie May Meder, Charito Bajuyo, Mary Grace Lomigo and Ivy Lapeña. Meder, Lomigo, Lapeña were joined by Meezel Cabreros to salvaged the women's 4X400m silver.
UM Davao's Analyn Gonzaga added a silver in women's 5K walk along with Meder who fell shy of the gold in 400m run.
Klent Reymon Panerio clinched the men's 10K walk bronze as teammates Meder and Cabreros also annexed bronzes in women's 200m dash and 400m hurdles, respectively.
Sonny Wagdos (5K), Adrian Linao (javeling throw) and Bajuyo (high jump) also pocketed golds earlier.
