KIDAPAWAN City's international master (IM) Edgar Reggie Olay and Panabo City's Henry Roger Lopez are early favorites when the Mayor Inday Sara and Vice Mayor Rody Duterte 76th Araw ng Dabaw Open Chess Tournament gets underway on Saturday and Sunday at the NCCC Mall Food Cove.
Organizer James Infiesto, also National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) regional director, said Olay and Lopez will have to face stiff competition against Davao City's top woodpushers.
"Players from Digos, who dominated the age-group tournament last weekend, are also coming," Infiesto said during the Davao Sportswriters Association Forum at Dexter's Pizza Stadium in Matina on Thursday.
He said cash prizes of P5,000, P2,500, P1,500, P750 and P500 await the top five placers in the Swiss System format chessfest sponsored by the City Government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.
Free registration is set from 10 a.m. to noon of Saturday at the playing venue. Games will start at 1 p.m. (MLSA)
