‘Araw’ Phoenix Marathon: Sotto, Avergonzado rule 42K

ILIGAN City native Jeffrey Sotto and Davao City's Emely Avergonzado lorded over their rivals to clinch the men's and women's 42K titles, respectively, of the Araw ng Dabaw Phoenix Marathon held Sunday at SM Lanang Premier.

Sotto clocked two hours, 37 minutes and 48 seconds to pocket the P25,000 champion's purse. He raced past Brokenshire College's Anthony Nerza who finished in close second with 2:37:52 and Iligan City's Brian Quiamco (2:47:57) who placed third. Nerza got P15,000 while Quiamco received P10,000.

Rounding up to 10 were Rodel Quilab (2:53:11) of Iligan City, Jensen Lloyd Pasaporte (2:56:49) of Tagum City, Mario Ecalner (2:56:58) of Davao City, Ronald Dagaang (3:00:35) of Team Titans Davao, Lloyd Malinao (3:08:09) of Davao City, Jonathan Pido (3:08:34) of Davao City and Melquiades Escuerdo (3:21:59).

In the distaff side, Avergonzado checked in at 3:27:15 to upset heavy favorite and fellow Brokenshire College varsity mainstay Cynthia Jaro (3:33:13) and veteran Mona Liza Ambasa (3:33:35) of South Cotabato.

Cristy Sevellino (3:37:07), Michelle Batac (3:39:24) of Surigao City, Vivian Avergonzado (3:49:55) of Davao City, Olive Firmeza (4:17:15) of Team Titans Davao, Virginia Tumapon (4:25:44) of Team Titans Davao Ranara Flores (4:37:42) of Iligan City and Joy Mawalic (4:38:52) of Davao City occupied the next seven spots.

Tagum's Rafael Poliquit, a Far Eastern University student, bagged the men's 21K crown with a time of 1:13:30 over Philip Duenas of Cebu City (1:14:06) and another Tagum entry Joebert Carolino (1:15:29) in the annual race organized by Vantage Sports Promotions and jointly presented by Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc., Pioneer Insurance, SM City Davao and SM Lanang Premier in partnership with the City Government of Davao.

Cebu City standout Mary Joy Tabal registered 1:25:44 to rule the women's 21K while Brokenshire College's Creselyn Jaro (1:36:49) placed second and Ruffa Sorongon (1:38:32) wounded up third.

The 10K titles went to Sonny Wagdos of the University of Mindanao and Mae Barit of Brokenshire College. Wagdos (33:22) outran Brian Lupio (55:08) of Team Titans Davao and Jesmer Lopez (35:17) to govern the men's side while Barit, born in Kapatagan, Digos City, timed 42:33 to rule the women's class over Richie unheralded Richie Dala (44:10) and Cellie Rose Jaro (46:19).

In men's 5K, Rolly Paderna (15:45), Michael Constantino (15:58) and Michael Barrosa (16:05) grabbed the first three spots while Jolly Mae Gabaisen (20:04), Merlyn Ledesma (20:37) and Daisy Canencia (21:09) took the top three places of the women's division.

The 3K 12-below winners were: boys - Jason Olan-Olan (10:45) first, Edrian Bitulan (11:10) second and Keciv Abrigon (11:54) third; girls - Rosenelyn Pepillo (12:13) first, Anne Marie Depone (13:09) second and Marianne Dojo (15:03) third.

All winners went home with cash prizes and medals.

Team Titans Davao, for its part, won P7,000 for being named the biggest delegation of the footrace that drew some 3,000 participants.
