TRMH-CMO, Goldstar axe wins in Kadayawan basketball-A A +A

REIGNING champion The Royal Mandaya Hotel-City Mayor's Office (TRMH-CMO) and Goldstar Hardware drew first blood by beating their respective rivals at the start of the Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Pulong Duterte Kadayawan Basketball Invitational Tournament at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center on Saturday night.
Highly-touted TRMH-CMO hacked out a 77-70 win over Montaña, while Goldstar Hardware demolished visiting Omega Pain Killer of Cebu, 67-61, over a capacity crowd.
TRMH-CMO coach Miguel Solitaria said they made adjustments on their defense since they didn't expect that Montaña won't have post threats.
The defending champs were fortunate to have recovered from their shooting woes in the first period where they only made four shots out of 22 attempts.
"We expect our game to be a lot better against Goldstar," Solitaria said in a text message to Sun.Star Davao on Sunday.
Solitaria also said the game was favorable to Montaña while TRMH-CMO was still working on its chemistry as it was their first time to play with Ian Sangalang and Chester Tolomia.
Down by four points, 33-37, at the break, highly-touted TRMH-CMO surged to snatch a 49-41 behind the joint efforts of former PBA Rain or Shine import Jamelle Cornley, Mark Andaya and ex-PBA player Chris Calaguio with barely five minutes and two seconds left in the game.
Montaña import Arnold Noah, Asean Basketball League's Jonathan Fernandez and Jun Dizon then made attempts to close the gap but failed as the Nick Serafica-coached squad succumbed to crucial misses and costly turnovers.
TRMH-CMO's Cornley took charge in the final canto, accounting for nine points of his total 30 output as Andaya and PBA D-League NLEX Road Warriors' Ian Sangalang chipped in baskets of their own to finish the job. Andaya and Sangalang drilled in identical 10 points.
Montaña's Noah and Fernandez combined for 33 in the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP)-sanctioned cagefest that stakes P100,000 cash prize for the champion.
ABL veteran Francis "Kiko" Adriano, meanwhile, led scoring for Goldstar with 14 points while teammate Leomer Losentes added 12.
Goldstar coach Ice Gravador attributed their win to their fastbreak points but he added they will have to improve on their free throws and open shots when they meet TRMH-CMO Sunday night.
"We just have to focus on executing our plays against Mandaya. No special game plan. The tournament is very short, there is no time for practice," Gravador said.
Goldstar, indeed, expects a tougher time as the Christopher "Bong" Go-managed TRMH-CMO, owned by Glenn and Gerome Escandor, will have NLEX seven-footer slotman Greg Slaughter joining them in the second day of competition.
The top two teams will fight for the championship tomorrow while the bottom two will play for third in the meet sponsored by the city government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.
