Wednesday, August 21, 2013
DISMAYED by the abrupt cancellation of the championship game due to a "game-fixing" controversy, Davao City's basketball fanatics still trooped to the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center as powerhouse cast The Royal Mandaya Hotel escaped a 79-74 win over Cebu City-based Omega Pain Killer on Tuesday evening.
Both teams were entered in the Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Pulong Duterte Kadayawan Basketball Invitational Tournament that was rocked by the alleged manipulation of game between Goldstar Hardaware and Montaña Pawnshop on Monday night where the latter prevailed, 72-65.
Fatima Fabricante, who watched the exhibition match, was disappointed that the championship game was called off.
She said that that both teams should have just played each other in the true spirit of sportsmanship.
TRMH-CMO owner Glenn Escandor was also disappointed that his team was denied a grand slam.
"Sayang lang ba kay wala naging successful, amoang quest to really get the grand slam (It's unfortunate that the tournament was not successful. We were really eyeing to win a grand slam)," Escandor said.
He, however, said he will continue to form a team for city-funded basketball tournaments so Davao fans will continue to enjoy "quality basketball".
NLEX Road Warriors seven-foot center Greg Slaughter drilled in 14 points to lead scoring for TRMH-CMO.
