THE Holy Cross College of Davao Judo Club (HCDC-JC) decided to back out from the Mayor Rody Duterte and Vice-mayor Pulong Duterte Kadayawan Judo-Newasa Youth Tournament at Abreeza Ayala Mall last Saturday night following allegations of "biased judging" in the competition.
Mariano Bacayuga, coach and instructor of HCDC, said in an interview with Sun.Star, that there was an irregularity in the game against Sydney Tancontian, daughter of event organizer and current Philippine Judo Federation (PJF) regional president Paolo Tancontian and HCDC-JC's Rovilyn Pampilo.
"My player scored ippon (full point) but Paolo was there, the father was there in front of the referee calling it's not ipong, so the referee seeing the father changed to yuko only," Bacayuga explained.
"I've been an organizer for a couple of times and president of this Judo club for many years, but during the tournament I don't include myself in the area. I need to be neutral. Siya nagko coach pa, that's not a good incident," the former PJF regional president said.
"I told Paolo, it is over, my player won, he did not honor the score of the referee," he said.
He said that Tiancontian, the father cannot accept that Sydney was defeated by a novice.
However Paolo Tancontian clarified that aside from being the organizer, he is also the jury of the tourney because of the lack of manpower.
"Pwede namang mag-change and decision ng referee pag nakita nya na hindi sapat, (The referee's decision can change if he sees that it is not enough,)" the tourney organizer said.
"Yung bagsak ni Sydney gilid lang kasi, dapat kasi may video, (Sydney's fall was only on the side, there should have been a video,)" he said in a text message.
While officiating referee Ace Larida confirmed that he had mistakes and he just took the jury's decision. He also added that the tourney is designed "just for fun" and not to be taken up seriously.
"The area is small and we don't even have the mat used for Judo," said Larida.
Tournament organizer Paolo said that they are planning make their events exclusive for kids next time to avoid commotions.
Bacayuga, meanwhile, said that they will conduct a meeting for the evaluation of the tournament and later decide what action they need to be take up.
