DAVAO City athletes begin the action today, Aug. 28, as games in the Batang Pinoy 2013 Mindanao Qualifying Leg opens in separate venues in Tagum City.
The 280-strong city delegation is among the 40 competing local government units (LGUs) entered in the regional eliminations that attracted over 1,600 athletes.
Dabawenyos expect to improve their 50-gold, 36-silver and 19-bronze medal haul in the 2012 Mindanao qualifying held in Dapitan City. The harvest was courtesy of the athletics, swimming, chess, arnis and badminton teams.
This year, however, Davao is seeing action in 16 out of 22 sports.
Judo coach Paolo Tancontian, in a recent conversation with Sun.Star Davao, said: "Mangharos mi ug gold sa Tagum (We will harvest golds in Tagum)."
Medal-rich judo will be played at the Gaisano Mall of Tagum along with wrestling and taekwondo events for 15 years old and under players.
Chino Tancontian, Andre Tequin, Benedict Malaki, James Ryan, Christian Badiang, Ryan Ang, Benz Derick Binoya, Jhon Loyd Gudin, Michael Jay Ocleaza and Dave Leonard Nistal are vying for honors in judo boys division while Jhanen Mae Marcos, Leah Tuble, Marion Billena, Mighty Gel Cutler, Sydney Tancontian, Steffany Jane Calamba, Charise Divine Aseneta, Crislette Bontigao and Justien Jay Pagnanawon will test their mettle in the girls side.
Some of the judokas will also compete in wrestling. Paolo Tancontian recently said, "We have good chances in wrestling because we really have a trainer in wrestling."
The city karatekas, who have been training for over a month, said they aim for slots in the national finals slated Nov. 19 to 23.
Lya Marie Carillo, a national double gold medalist in Batang Pinoy national finals in Iloilo City, will lead Davao's charge in the Mindanao qualifying while be-medaled woodpusher Ella Grace Moulic will try keep her winning form in girls chess.
Athletics coach Mamerto Aventurado said events to be played this morning are 5,000-meter run, long jump, shot put, high jump, 2K walk and 400m. Other events will be played at 6 p.m.
Davao is also fielding entries in boys and girls volleyball, boys and girls badminton, boys and girls swimming, girls softball, boys and girls chess, boys and girls dance sport, boys sepak takraw, boys and girls table tennis, boys and girls arnis, boys and girls taekwondo, boys and girls karatedo, boys and girls tennis and boys boxing.
Davao City and other Davao Region delegations are being billeted at the Tagum City National High School.
