TOP-SEEDED Ella Grace Moulic of Davao City swept all her six games to capture her third gold medal in the just-concluded 2013 Batang Pinoy Mindanao Qualifying Leg chess competition held at the Bulwagan ng Panlalawigan, Capitol Grounds in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.
The Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) high school student Moulic outwitted fellow Davao City player Honey Grace Buenafe, who was seeded third, in the final sixth round of the girls standard category.
Moulic also demolished Dabawenya Irish Yngayo, second-seed Allaney Jia Doroy of Agusan del Sur, Frince Ezra Vanjo Ocliasa of Mati City and Apopong, General Santos City bets Elizabeth Guanga and Jenaia Bettylynn Julom in the past five rounds of the Swiss System format tournament.
Doroy took the silver instead by tallying five points while Davao City's Joerlz Gimony salvaged the bronze by edging two other 4.5 scorers via superior tiebreaks.
Davao del Norte's Zsuzsa Grace Tabudlng and General Santos City's Florabelle Masong placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 37-player field girls event.
The former Asian Youth campaigner Moulic's sterling feat came on the heels of clinching the blitz and rapid golds.
The boys standard gold, meanwhile, went to Hareve Jame Sumatra of Monkayo, Compostela Valley. He earned five points to figure in a five-way tie with Davao City's Tahseen Saludsong and Bhing Joel Gimony and General Santos City's Alberto Diolola, Jr. and Charles Faith Ayon but Sumatra posted had better tiebreaks of 25 over Saludsong's 24, Gimony's 22 and Diolola's 21.5.
The Davao City's chess team hauled a total of three golds, five silvers and five bronzes in the qualifying event where the top three placers in each event booked seats to the national championship set on Nov. 19 to 23 in Zamboanga City.
