Barbosa tops Mindanao Open-A A +A

GRAND master (GM) Oliver Barbosa of Taytay, Rizal clinched the title and the handsome cash prize of P50,000 in the 3rd Gov. Emmylou "Lala" Taliño-Mendoza Mindanao Open Chess Championship that came to a close over the weekend at the Provincial Capitol Conference Room in Amas, Kidapawan City.
The top-seeded Barbosa finished with eight points in the nine-round Swiss System format competition, forcing draws with second-seed GM Mark Paragua of Quezon City and third-seed GM John Paul Gomez of Laguna in the fifth and sixth rounds, respectively.
Barbosa axed wins over international master (IM) Kim Steven Yap of Cebu City, IM Ronald Dableo of Mandaluyong, Ronie Pujas of Bukidnon, national master (NM) Roger Sarip of Midsayap, IM Oliver Dimakiling of Davao City, Cesar Apalla of Koronadal and Abdulnaim Ahmad of Kidapawan City.
Gomez edged fellow 7.5 scorer Paragua with superior tiebreaks to place second as the latter settled for third instead.
Dimakiling led two other 6.5 scorers Dableo and GM Darwin Laylo for the fourth spot. Dableo occupied the fifth place while Laylo came sixth followed by six-pointers Yap, Henry Roger Lopez of Panabo, NM Emmanuel Emperado of Mandaluyong, Ronie Pujas of Bukidnon, Usman Sarangani of Marawi City, Jayson Salubre of Bohol and NM Macacuna Macala of Davao City who landed on seventh to 14th place.
The runner-up received P25,000 while the next eight placers took home P15,000, P10,000, P7,000, P5,000, P4,000, P3,000 and P2,000.
The 11th to 15th placer got P1,000 each along with the tournament's best male and female kiddie players, best male and female junior players and best senior player.
The annual event, which attracted 64 players from all over the country, was sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
It was jointly-organized by the Provincial Government of Cotabato, the Kidapawan Chess Club Inc., and Batch 85 - Notre Dame of Kidapawan Boys and Girls HS Alumni Association Inc.
