DANIEL Rome Borinaga of Holy Cross of Sasa and Marianne Jasmine Infiesto of Ateneo de Davao University reaped top honors at the close of the Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Pulong Duterte Kadayawan Chess Age-Group Tournament at the NCCC Mall Davao Food Cove Hall on Sunday.
Borinaga edged fellow five-pointer Kenneth John Tabada of Jose Maria College (JMC) via superior tiebreak to clinch the boys 20-under title of the six-round Swiss System format event organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)-Davao Region.
Tabada settled for the runner-up honors instead, while Bhing Joel Gimony of JMC-High School made 4.5 points to finish third.
Infiesto, who earned 5.0, bested Joerlz Gimony with better tiebreaks to rule the girls' 20-under event. Janes Hitfield Caingles of Holy Cross of Davao College came third with four points.
The boys and girls 14-under titles went to Hareve Hames Sumatra of Monkayo, Compostela Valley and Frince Ezra Vanjo Ocliasa of Mati School of Arts.
Sumatra scored perfect six points while runner-up Kryz Lord Owen Metran of L.S. Sarmiento National High School and Jeylord Villareal of Mintal Comprehensive National High School tallied identical 5.0 points to occupy the next two spots.
Ocliasa, for her part, prevailed over fellow 5.0-scorers Honey Grace Buenafe of JMC and Lorraine Yngayo of Davao Central College with superior tiebreaks.
In 10-under, Rodel Buenafe of San Isidro Elementary School emerged champion in boys 10 category over next two placers Billy Joel Sarno and Kyle Patryk Metran, while DCC bet Irish Yngayo bagged the girls title at the expense of Vneshdyl Bureros of Lope T. Quial Sr. Central Elementary School of Cotabato City and Queen Peralta of Dahes who wounded up in the second and third spots.
Ateneo, meanwhile, copped the school champion award for 10-below division while DCC clinched the school champion 14-below class title and JMC romped away with the school champion for 20-below plum.
Ateneo's Raphaela Bianca Adel (4.0), Jonathan Fune (4.0) and Kavin Castellanes(3.0) combined for 11 points while DCC's key pointers were Lorraine Yngayo (5.0), Florence Faith Guevarra (4.0) and Caissa Jane Guevarra (3.0) totaled for 12 points.
Kenneth John Tabada (5.0), Bhing Joel Gimony (4.5) and Joerlz Gimony (5.0) joined efforts for 14.5 points.
Cash prizes and medals were given away to the individual winners while school champion teams received trophies.
