MINDANAO leg junior girls champion Ella Grace Moulic of Davao City downplayed her chances as the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships grand finals that unwraps today, Sept. 14, until Sunday at the SM City Megamall in Mandaluyong City.
The 15-year-old Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) High School student Moulic, who swept all three gold medals in the Batang Pinoy Mindanao Qualifying Leg chess competition in Tagum City last month, is seeing action for the first time in the juniors category.
"Ako yata ang pinakabata nga mudula sa akong event kay ang uban mga college students naman. Pero kayanon gihapon nako. Maningkamot ko nga mudaug (I think I'm the youngest player in my division since others are already in college but I will still give my best to win)," Moulic said in an interview with Sun.Star Davao at Dexter's Pizza Stadium in Matina.
The veteran age-group internationalist Dabawenya will be playing a double elimination format opposite regional qualifiers Karen Enriquez of the National University, Jezzele Villarin of Cebu City, Michelle Yaon of the University of Sto. Tomas, Gladys Romero of the Far Eastern University, and Arvie Lozano of Calabarzon.
Huge cash prizes and creatively-designed trophies await winners of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)-sanctioned grand finals that also features the juniors boys, kiddies boys and kiddies girls categories. (MLSA)
