HOLY Cross of Davao College (HCDC) player Ella Grace Moulic grabbed the runner-up honors in junior girls 20-below category of the 21st Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships that ended Sunday at SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.
The 15-year-old Moulic, who clinched three gold medals in the 2013 Batang Pinoy Mindanao Qualifying Leg in Tagum City last month, was only one-point shy of champion Jean Karen Enriquez, a varsity player of the National University, who finished with seven points in the 10-round Swiss System format finals.
Enriquez pocketed the top purse of P20,000 while Moulic got P15,000.
Moulic edged fellow six-pointer Arvie Lozano of Calabarzon Region via superior tiebreaks to grab the second place as the latter settled for the third-place prize of P10,000.
Gladys Hazelle M. Romero of the Far Eastern University (5.0), Jazelle Villarin of Cebu City (3.5), and Michelle Yaon (2.5) occupied the next three spots of the double elimination category.
The top-seeded Dabawenya, the youngest junior player in her division, scored wins over Villarin in the first round, Lozano (2nd), Romero (8th), Yaon (9th), and Enriquez (10th) then split the point with Romero in the third.
Moulic lost her fourth, fifth, and seventh matches opposite Yaon, Enriquez, and Lozano, respectively.
Moulic's father, Alfred, told Sun.Star Davao that she had difficulty playing Enriquez in their first meeting.
"Naglisod siya kay Enriquez sa una nilang laban. Na-outplayed siya sa black, Caro-Kann Defense pero nakabawi sya sa endgame sa ilahang final round (Ella had a hard time playing black against Enriquez who defeated her via Caro-Kann Defense during their first meeting but she recovered in the endgame of their last round)," Alfred said in text messages on Monday.
Moulic was a two-time runner-up in the Mindanao leg in 2011 and 2012. She won a grand finals berth for the first time having topped the regional qualifying held early August at The Annex of SM City Davao. Her recent runner-up finish marked her debut in the juniors division of the annual Shell tournament.
Moulic gave a "blow-out" to Manila-based Davao players Austin Jacob Literatus, Rowelyn Joy Acedo, John Ray Batucan, Denzel Amar, and Aglipay Oberio with her prize money. The rest of her award, according to her father, will be given to her mother.
The junior boys title, meanwhile, went to Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano while candidate master Jan Nigel Galan was placed second and Timohty John So Kua was third.
In kiddies, Dale Bernardo captured the boys crown over Haince Patrick de Leon and Istraelito Rilloraza while Jesca Docena topped the distaff side over Alexis Anne Osena and Bea Mendoza.
