DEFENDING champion De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Spikers team is poised to defend its University Athletic Association of the Philippines (Uaap) title this year.
Team captain Abigail Maraño, during the team's meet and greet at The Annex of SM City Davao, said they have are serious in seeking a four-peat in the new Uaap season.
"We have never stopped training. It's not always about heart, it's training to be a champion. We can't tell for now about the title-retention but we are sure we will work hard to get that," Maraño replied to a question posed by Sun.Star Davao.
Setter Mika Esperanza, for her part, said they are not even keen on reviving any rivalry.
Esperanza said, "Our stiffest rival is ourselves. We need to overcome our fears first before we face any other opponent. We need to work on our strength as a team."
Power spike Ara Galang agreed that teamwork plays a great role in winning championships.
"Kailangan talaga bawat isa may heart of a champion at maging matiyaga. Our focus is not only Ateneo but the rest of the Uaap teams," Galang said.
The DLSU Lady Spikers played exhibition matches at the University of Southeastern Philippines Gym and Cultural Center in Davao City last Saturday pitting them against the Ruby de Leon-led Manila All-Stars in the main feature. The All-Stars, however, prevailed in three straight sets.
The Volleyball for a Cause, organized by JCI Central Davao, was held for the benefit of the Balay sa Adunay Pangandoy Youth Rehabilitation Center in Panacan. (MLSA)
