THE Davao del Norte won the right to host the 2014 Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet in a recent bid during a Davraa board meeting at the Department of Education regional office.
Davao del Norte provincial sports coordinator Giovanni Gulanes bared this to Sun.Star Davao in a recent phone conversation.
Dav del Norte defeated Mati City, which also signified its interest to host the regional qualifying for the Palarong Pambansa, during a votation.
Gulanes said Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario, however, made the board agree to grant Mati City the hosting of the 2015 edition of the Davraa Meet instead.
Gulanes said, "Governor del Rosario wanted to return the favor to Mati which gave way for the province to host the 2013 Davraa Meet."
Gulanes said that in 2012, former Mati Mayor Michelle Rabat expressed her intent to host the 2013 Davraa Meet but then withdrew her bid when Gov. del Rosario also showed his interest for the hosting.
Gulanes also said the Davraa board members may have been impressed by the province's hosting of this year's regional meet, adding: "The multi-million modern and standard sports facilities of the province was also a major factor that made the province win the bidding."
Davao del Norte also hosted the recently-concluded Batang Pinoy Mindanao Qualifying Leg.
It also won hosting rights of the 2014 National Private Schools Athletic Association Championships. (MLSA/Sun.Star Davao)
