EXPECT top-notch basketball action when the Davao Champions League gets underway on Saturday at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center.
Phoenix Petroleum Philippines marketing supervisor Neb Bulaclac, speaking in Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association forum at Calle Cinco Restobar along J.P. Laurel Avenue, said the tournament will be Davao's own version of the UAAP or NCAA.
He said that it took them three years to conceptualize the tournament, saying that they plan to hold it every year.
The cagefest, sanctioned by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas regional director Regino "Boy" Cua, aims to produce future basketball stars and provide opportunities for young pool of talents to be discovered for bigger leagues outside Davao.
A total of 15 schools from Davao City and one team from Panabo are entered including Agro Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines Sailors, AMA Computer College Titans, Ateneo de Davao University Blue Knights, University of Immaculate Conception Eagles, University of Mindanao Wild Cats, MATS College of Technology Navigators, Holy Cross of Davao College Crusaders, Rizal Memorial College Bulldogs, Jose MAria College Kings, STI College Olympians, John Paul College of Davao Saints, Davao Merchant Marine Academy Sailors, Davao Central College Blazing Torch, San Pedro College Blue Stallions, and Davao del Norte State College Sharks from Panabo.
Bulaclac added that the schools will be divided into three brackets and the top two of each will compete in a single round robin. The top four squads will advance to the finals through a cross-over.
A team parade with their respective drum and bugle and muses will usher the brief opening rites. It will be followed by a band showdown and cheerdance competition.
Band showdown champion will receive P5,000 while the cheerdance titlist will pocket P15,000. The tournament champion will claim P15,000 and a slot to the Mindanao Regional Championship of Philippine Collegiate Champions League on November 9 to 11.
