Karatefest kicks off Saturday-A A +A

A TOTAL of 75 participants will show their wares in the TKS Petron Interclub Karatedo Age-Group Championship that will kick off tomorrow, Saturday, at the Gaisano Grand Citimall entertainment center.
Association for the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK) Davao chief Rommel Tan said the tournament is part of their preparations for the 21st Karatedo World Cup on Jan. 13 to 19, 2014.
Guesting in Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association Forum at Calle Cinco Restobar, he said Holy Cross of Sasa, University of Immaculate Conception, University of Mindanao (UM) of Tagum, UM Panabo, Mabini National High School, Bangkal, and other karate clubs in the city have confirmed to join.
He added, "Teams from Cagayan de Oro, Bukidnon, Malaybalay, and Manolo Fortich withdrew their participation citing security concerns in the city."
Players will compete in kata and kumite in six to seven years old, eight to nine years old, 10-11 years old, and 16-17 years old categories as well as in seniors male and female divisions. Medals and certificates will be awarded to the winners.
A photo contest for hobbyists, meanwhile, will stake P3,000 for the champion, P2,000 for the runner-up and P1,000 for the third placer.
Tan said former Philippine Sports Commissioner Leon Gonzalo "Binggoy" Montemayor will grace the opening rites. (CRC)
