THE Holy Child School of Davao (HCSD) Reds inflicted a 95-29 thrashing on the University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC) yesterday to book a seat in the cross-over semi-finals of the 4th Royal Mandaya Hotel Cup in cooperation with Mayor Rodrigo and Vice-Mayor Paolo Duterte basketball tournament at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center yesterday.
HCSD, coached by Nestor "Tating" Sorosa, surged to a 34-11 lead at the break then never looked back to seal the win, their third in four outings in the cadets division.
Vence Malero canned 16 points as Allan Beltran, Prince Lloyd Unzon and Leonard Salvane chipped in 14, 12, and 11 points, respectively.
Coach Sorosa, in an interview, said they need to prepare for the semi-finals as they still don't know who they will be up against.
"Halos rookies man ni among players. Duha lang ang karaan diri. Bug-at naman gud ang semis. Kinahanglan mas mag focus pami sa training, sa conditioning sa mga bata ug depensa sa dula kay usahay magkolaps pa ang depensa (Most of our players are rookies and only two regulars are still around. It will be a very tough semis. We must focus on our training, conditioning of the players and at the same time work on our defense since most of the time our defense collapses)," Sorosa told Sun.Star Davao.
Tournament commissioner Rico Jhone Biliran, in a phone conversation, said the placing of the cadets' Final Four will have yet to be determined depending on the results of other elimination games still being played as of presstime.
Biliran added, "Holy Child, with its 3-1 card, is assured of a semis slot but we will have to wait for the outcome of the other games to determine the ranking of the top four teams."
In the 8 a.m. mini game, Holy Child beat UIC, 50-34, as Cherokee Buladaco made 14 baskets for the Reds.
Today's cadet games, meanwhile, pit Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School against Precious International School of Davao at 2 p.m. and Assumption College of Davao against UIC at 3:30 p.m.
The tournament, presented by The Royal Mandaya Hotel owner and president Glenn Escandor in cooperation with the Office of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Office of Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte, is sanctioned by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas regional director Regino "Boy" Cua.
