DAVAO City's first and newest international arbiter James Infiesto is also Mindanao's one and only.
Infiesto's title was approved by the Fide Executive Board during the 84th World Congress held Oct. 7 and 8 in Tallinn, Estonia.
Infiesto, guesting in yesterday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at Calle Cinco Restobar along J.P. Laurel Avenue, said: "This is a dream come true, something that I can share not just to Davao City but also to the whole country. It is truly a great honor to be the first Dabawenyo and Mindanaoan to be given such distinction."
Infiesto, the eighth Filipino IA, said it was no easy feat to receive the prestigious recognition saying that if the grand master is the highest title a chess player can get, an IA is the highest title a chess arbiter can also acquire.
The National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) regional chief's international arbiter certificate badge will have yet to be awarded to him.
His first assignment will be the upcoming Asian Youth Paragames set in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where he is the lone Filipino IA officiating the tournament along with two other foreigners.
"This new achievement was just a dream that has become a reality. I'm very happy for this title. This will keep me going," Infiesto said.
He also said that hard work and humility are important factors to fulfill a dream, adding that one should never stop to strive for excellence.
Infiesto is also set to officiate two international competitions in December.
Infiesto served as deputy arbiter in the 4th Incheon Asian Indoor Competition in South Korea in August and in the 14th Asean+ Age-Group Chess Championships in July.
