FILIPINOS Lee Vann Corteza and Warren Kiamco were sent to the losers' side after bowing to their respective rivals Friday in the 38th Annual US Open 9-Ball Championship.
The World Cup of Pool champion Corteza, a native of Davao City, succumbed to Johnny Archer of the USA, 1-11. The 34-year-old Dabawenyo took a 1-0 lead before regained composure and sweep all frames to stay unbeaten.
Corteza, however, will try to bounce back from the losers bracket to keep his hopes alive for the title that evaded him in 2011 where he only finished 17th. He earlier bested American T. D' Alfonso, 11-7, after defeating Marc Claramunt Vidal of Spain on the same note.
His next opponent will have yet to be determined.
Cebu City's Kiamco, for his part, lost to Huidji See of The Netherlands, 8-11, after edging American Frank Scharbach, 11-10 and surviving past Mika Immonen, 11-10.
Kiamco was set to clash against Ralf Souquet in the losers' side. (MLSA)
