THE DMMA College of Southern Philippines (DMMACSP) Mariners sailed through a 58-41 win over the Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) Crusaders on Tuesday in the ongoing quarter-finals of the Davao Champions League at the Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) Gym.
The Mariners, coached by Bambi Santander, relied on its solid defense and fastbreak points to keep the Crusaders in as much as 20 points, 38-18, barely two minutes and 50 seconds left in third period.
Desperate Crusaders made attempts to cut the gap by 14, 28-42, but Mariners brothers Jay Mark and Jhayston Oquias, Aric Fernandez and Eden Bialao took charge to stretch their team's lead midway in the fourth to the fading minutes of the game sanctioned by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Region 11.
Ronald Bangoy and Jhayston poured in 14 and 13 points, respectively, as Al Nael Lacid chipped in 10 and Fernandez with nine for the Mariners who improved to a 2-1 card.
Zairill Carbonell canned 16 to lead scoring for the Crusaders who absorbed their second straight loss.
DMMACSP coach Santander, in an interview, said their hardwork and defense paid off in their game against HCDC.
But he said they will still have to play and beat Agro-Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines (AIFCP) Sailors to ensure a spot in the Final Four. Both teams were playing as of Wednesday.
"Dagko kaayo ang Agro. Run and gun defense nalang gyud among himuon. Dili mi pwede mag one-on-one nila kailangan gyud padaganon sila (Agro players are big so we will have no option but make them run)," Santander told Sun.Star Davao.
He said Agro and current leader Jose Maria College (JMC) Kings are the teams to beat in the tournament presented by Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc.
In another game, the University of Mindanao (UM) Wildcats clobbered the Ateneo de Davao University Blue Knights, 60-51, behind Rey Anthony Suerte who drilled in 17 points.
Blue Knights Jose Mari Presbitero and Paolo Angelo Dailisan combined for 31.
